Penelope wrestles with Team Nauman Wrestling Club, and her journey back to wrestling is one we loved reading about.
She first stepped onto the mat in kindergarten, then spent several years in gymnastics, competitive cheer, and martial arts. When she returned to wrestling in fifth grade, something clicked. She knew she'd found where she belonged.
Since then, Penelope has gone all in. She trains year-round with the goal of wrestling in college, earned a spot as the only girl on her youth team's boys dual roster, has competed on boys teams at local and national tournaments, and is a Pennsylvania Girls Keystone State Championship placer.
But one of our favorite things about her application had nothing to do with medals.
This past year, Penelope helped recruit girls for her school district's very first junior high girls wrestling team.
That's how this sport grows. One girl decides to wrestle. Then she makes another girl feel like she can do it too. Before long, there's an entire team where there wasn't one before.
Penelope celebrates other girls' accomplishments, encourages younger wrestlers, and makes an effort to help new teammates feel welcome. She understands that another girl's success doesn't take anything away from her own. It makes girls wrestling stronger.
