Oakley is 8 years old and wrestles for Sturgis Youth Wrestling in Sturgis, South Dakota. What inspired us most about her application wasn't just her incredible success on the mat, but the message she wants every young girl to hear.
When Oakley first started wrestling, there were very few girls in her age and weight class, so she often found herself competing against boys. Along the way, she was told many times how well she wrestled "despite being a girl."
Today, she's proving that girls don't need qualifiers.
Oakley wants every girl to know they can accomplish anything they set their minds to, and sometimes they can even surprise the people who underestimate them.
Her accomplishments already speak for themselves. Oakley is a state champion, a multiple-time national champion, and a multiple-time state placer. But what we love even more is the way she carries herself. Her family shared that she's always cheering for other girls, giving her opponents a hug after matches, and representing girls wrestling with a smile and a positive attitude.
That's the kind of ambassador our sport needs.
